UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is organizing a summit on climate ambition on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, a few months before COP28.

Neither China nor the United States, the two main global emitters of greenhouse gases, nor the United Arab Emirates – where COP28 will be held at the end of the year – are among the 34 countries invited to speak during the summit.

The leaders of Brazil, Canada, the European Union, Pakistan, South Africa and Tuvalu, considered by Antonio Guterres as taking initiatives to “accelerate” global action on climate, will notably take the speech.

Representatives of companies like Allianz, or institutions like the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will also speak.

The U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Climate Action, Selwin Hart, said in an interview with Reuters this week that the aim of the summit was not to put countries or companies that had not not been held back “in embarrassment”, but to encourage others to act more.
