While an Uncharted 5 is officially in the works, a new report from TheLeak.co claims that a reboot of the franchise has been commissioned by Sony. A brand new studio would be in the hands of the project, while Naughty Dog, the fathers of the license, would simply oversee development.
With Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, the Naughty Dog studio has definitely drawn a line under Nathan Drake. However, this does not mean that Sony, publisher of the games in the saga, is done with the license. In April 2022, we learned that Naughty Dog was looking for developers for new Uncharted-branded projects. What to consider an Uncharted 5? There is only one step.
For good reason, it’s hard to imagine Sony throwing such a popular franchise into oblivion. The PS5 port of Uncharted 4 and Uncharted Lost Legacy received critical acclaim and sold well. The thing was also confirmed after the launch of the Uncharted Legacy of Thieves compilation on PC in October 2022.
The film adaptation of Uncharted was also a hit at the box office, signing the best start to the start of 2022 in France. And obviously, Sony is determined to keep this goose that lays the golden egg. According to a report from TheLeak.co site relayed by Insider Gaming, Sony would have validated the development of a reboot of Uncharted.
Towards a reboot of Uncharted on PS5 and Xbox Series?
According to the two sources mentioned in this article, the Japanese publisher would have chosen to entrust the project to a brand new studio. Indeed, we would not find Naughty Dog at the controls. Nonetheless, The Last of Us daddies would still oversee development. Of course, these revelations should be taken with a grain of salt.
However, it should be remembered that Sony recently confirmed the existence of a new studio based in San Diego supposed to work with Naughty Dog on “an exciting new project”. In October 2022, many specialized media relayed a job offer from Sony mentioning the creation of a new team on an important project, in collaboration with Naughty Dog. You will agree, all this information reinforces the statements of TheLeak.co.
Now, it remains to be seen what Sony and this studio have in store for us. A remake of the first Uncharted? A whole new story with another character as the hero? We think in particular of the daughter of Nathan and Elena for example. The bets are open.
