United Internet reportedly wants to sell Gmx.de and Web.de

The internet service provider United Internet is said to want to sell its two web portals Gmx.de and Web.de. These are among the best known e-mail service providers on the web.

The entrepreneur Ralph Dommermuth, founder and CEO of United Internet, has big plans, reports the Handelsblatt. In order to expand a new, ultra-fast 5G mobile network with his telecom provider 1&1 and to make himself independent of Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica (O2), whose infrastructure he has been renting so far, he is looking for buyers for the e-mail portals GMX and Web.de. It could be about a minority or a majority stake in the relevant division. The Handelsblatt learned this from financial and industry circles and from several people familiar with the matter, according to the business magazine. GMX and Web.de were founded in the mid-1990s and are among the German pioneers of internet business. According to the evaluation of the portals, which are largely financed by advertising, the sale could be around 1.5 billion euros.

A 5G mobile network from 1&1 would be the fourth in Germany. United Internet has so far left inquiries from the Handelsblatt about the sales plans unanswered – we too have asked for more detailed information and are curious to see whether we will receive an answer.
