In times of war, the need for information is particularly great, as is the danger for the reporting journalists. In Kiev, therefore, a multi-storey car park is being turned into a studio.

In order to ensure reporting during the fighting, the four largest TV stations in Ukraine have joined forces and started a joint news channel. “United News. We are strong together”. With this overlay on the background of the colors of the Ukrainian flag, a special news broadcast began. TV presenters Elena Morozova and Vadym Kolodiychuk broadcast from a parking garage in Kiev for security reasons.

The moderators are standing at a small table with laptops, both are wearing jackets, and cars can be seen parked in the background. Because there was an air alert in Kiev, they too, like many other people, had gone to a safe place, they said. Reports on the military situation in the country were then broadcast.

Immediately after the invasion, the various television stations had largely switched to just broadcasting news. Advertisements and entertainment programs were discontinued. Contingency plans are in place to enable retransmissions both in Ukraine and internationally. The use of YouTube, online platforms and social media should also be ensured.

On Friday, a television station already broadcast instructions on how to make Molotov cocktails. The TV spot showed a person making the makeshift explosives by pouring a colored liquid into a glass bottle, with a diagram on the side showing how to seal the bottle with a cloth wick. Earlier, Ukraine’s defense ministry tweeted that citizens should “make Molotov cocktails and overthrow the occupiers” as Russian forces closed in on the capital, Kyiv.
