“Unmistakable Message”
Nancy Pelosi makes surprise visit to Kyiv

The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, becomes a symbol, as does the Ukrainian government’s perseverance there. President Zelenskyy receives another high-ranking international guest: the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Pelosi.

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, paid an unannounced visit to Kyiv and spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Pelosi said she wanted to thank the Ukrainians “for their fight for freedom,” according to a video released by the Ukrainian presidency. “We promise to be here for you until the fight is over.”

The Speaker of the House of Representatives also reiterated in a statement “that more US aid is on the way.” Washington is currently working on implementing the additional support of 33 billion dollars (around 31 billion euros) for Ukraine in the war against Russia that President Joe Biden has requested from Congress.

A spokesman for Pelosi said: “Our delegation has traveled to Kyiv to send an unequivocal and resounding message to the whole world: America stands firmly on the side of Ukraine.” The US is supporting Ukraine with billions in military aid.

For his part, Zelenskyy thanked the United States on Twitter for their contribution “to protecting the sovereignty and integrity of our state”. At the same time, he published the video that shows him with Pelosi flanked by armed soldiers in front of the presidential building in Kyiv and during the joint conversation. Selenskyj honored Pelosi with the Order of Princess Olga, third degree, in gratitude for his support.

According to the US, Pelosi was accompanied by a congressional delegation. She then planned to travel to Poland to meet President Andrzej Duda and other senior officials.
