With “648 fire starts” causing “874 vehicles set on fire” during the night of New Year’s Eve in France, the Interior Ministry reported on Saturday a “decrease” in the number of cars burned compared to in previous years (924 fire starts in 2019 for 1316 burned vehicles).
Place Beauvau also notes a drop in “attacks by the police” compared to the transition from 2019 to 2020 (the last New Year under curfew is not comparable).
The number of arrests recorded on the national territory is increasing, with 441 arrests against 376 two years ago. They resulted in 381 police custody (314 in 2019).
Incidents in the Grand Est
– In Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), the night of New Year’s Eve is marked by “strong activity”. About thirty people (including several minors) were arrested, including four for “urban violence”, and two police officers were slightly injured, report Les Latest Nouvelles d’Alsace. 87 vehicles were set on fire in Strasbourg and in adjoining municipalities according to the Alliance police union, which evokes “a resurgence of activity”.
– A man has been arrested in Ostwald (Bas-Rhin) for throwing mortars at police officers and a person was arrested for firing a mortar in Erstein (Bas-Rhin). In Colmar (Haut-Rhin), five people were arrested.
– A party organized with 200 to 300 people was observed in a “sublet” restaurant in Schiltigheim, near Strasbourg. “Mortar fire at police officers” also took place in the parking lot of a supermarket in this town on the outskirts of Strasbourg.
– In Behren-lès-Forbach (Moselle), cars were burned and mortar fire was launched against gendarmes in the city according to Le Républicain Lorrain.
– Three cars were set on fire in Montbéliard (Doubs) and two in Belfort indicates L’Est Républicain.
Incidents elsewhere in France
In Nantes, in Loire-Atlantique, incidents broke out in the district of Malakoff and fireworks were fired. Forty cars were said to have been set on fire, according to Ouest France. Garbage cans were also burnt.
In Amiens, in the Somme, a few vehicles and garbage cans caught fire but the police were not attacked as in other years the Courrier Picard journalists have observed.
In Tours (Indre-et-Loire), eight vehicles set on fire during the evening of New Year’s Eve. Three cars on the side of Clermont-Ferrand (Puy de Dome).
In Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), two individuals were taken into custody for degrading cameras. Five other people were arrested for throwing projectiles at the police or firing mortars in their direction. A police vehicle was also degraded according to France Bleu.
