Greta Gerwig will chair the jury at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, making her the first US director to hold this position.

The year 2023 was the most successful of her career so far for “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig (40) – and things seem to be continuing in 2024, as Gerwig will be jury president at the Cannes Film Festival. That comes from one Statement on the film festival’s official website. The 40-year-old is the first American director in history to chair the Cannes jury.

Greta Gerwig is “overwhelmed”

Greta Gerwig accompanies the 77th edition of the festival, which will take place from May 14th to 25th in the sweet French coastal town. The Sacramento native would embody the renewal of world cinema and represent an era that breaks down barriers and mixes genres, the festival explains its decision.

“For me as a filmmaker, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of film can be,” Gerwig himself is quoted in the statement. “I am overwhelmed, excited and humbled to be able to chair the Cannes Film Festival jury,” it continued. The Cannes Film Festival announced the news a few days after the Berlinale appointed actress Lupita Nyong’o (40) as jury president for 2024.

Gerwig celebrated her breakthrough as a director in 2017 with her multiple Oscar-nominated debut film “Lady Bird.” After “Barbie,” she has her next huge project coming up: the reboot of the “Chronicles of Narnia” film adaptations.
