WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on Iran’s Intelligence and Security Ministry and the minister, accusing them of being linked to a July cyberattack on Albania and targeting also the United States and its allies.

The move comes after Albania severed diplomatic ties with Iran last Wednesday following a July computer attack on government sites, which it blamed on Iran.

In a statement, the US Treasury Department says the Department of Intelligence and Security runs several hacker rings.

The ministry has been the target of sanctions in the past.
