- US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi will no longer lead the Democrats in the US House of Representatives.
- The 82-year-old politician announced on Thursday that she will not be re-elected and will only take care of her constituency in San Francisco.
“For me, it’s time for a new generation to lead the Democratic faction, which I respect so much,” Pelosi said at the start of a parliamentary session in Washington.
The US Democrats lost their majority in the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. You must now appoint a new faction leader. Pelosi will remain MP.
Number three in the state
With Pelosi, one of the most powerful in US politics is giving up her leadership position in the House of Representatives. As chair, she was number three in the state ranking after the US president and his vice president.
The Democrat from California is considered a key liberal figure in American politics. In 2007, she became the first woman in the country to hold the position of Chair of the Chamber for the first time. She was the most powerful woman elected in US history until 2011, when Kamala Harris became vice president in 2021.
Pelosi once again became President of the Chamber in 2019, making him the central political opponent of Republican President Donald Trump. She was then elected to the post for another two-year term in November 2021.
Pelosi also attracted attention outside of the United States. For example, her visit to President Joe Biden’s Taiwan allies in early August provoked significant irritation in China.
A brutal attack on her husband Paul Pelosi recently overshadowed the US election campaign. A few days before the so-called midterms, an attacker broke into the couple’s home in San Francisco. The attack was aimed at her, who was not at home at the time.
