  • Coco Gauff sweeps Jelena Ostapenko off the field in just 67 minutes in the quarter-finals of the US Open and is in the semi-finals for the first time in New York.
  • There the local hero meets Karolina Muchova. The Czech prevailed in the round of eight against Bencic conqueror Sorana Cirstea.

Tuesday’s quarter-final affixes

A rude awakening for Jelena Ostapenko: After the Latvian surprisingly eliminated world number 1 Iga Swiatek in the round of 16, her journey at the US Open came to an end in the quarterfinals. Against Coco Gauff, Ostapenko was completely off his feet, especially in the first set, which only lasted 20 minutes. The 2017 French Open winner did not win a single game. In the second round there were at least two, whereby one came about when her opponent served. In total, the Latvian made 36 unforced errors against the consistent American.

The 19-year-old Gauff is in Flushing Meadows for the first time in the semi-finals. “It feels great, I’m so happy. Last year I lost in the quarterfinals, this time I really wanted to make it,” said the US teenager and spoke about the special challenge against Ostapenko, who is known for her powerful attacking game. “The whole match didn’t feel comfortable, even at match point.”

  • Karolina Muchova (CZE/WTA 10) see Sorana Cirstea (ROM/WTA 30) 6:0, 6:3

In the final Gauff meets Karolina Muchova. It was a “master class” that the audience at Arthur Ashe Stadium got to see in the first match of the night session. Muchova showed her entire repertoire in the hour and a half and didn’t give Sorana Cirstea, who had conquered Bencic, a chance in the end – even if the result belies the course of the game.

Muchova, who was in the final of the French Open at the beginning of June, took over from the start and quickly pulled away. The fact that the first set lasted more than 40 minutes despite a 6:0 was mainly due to the 4th game: The Czech had to go over the debut 10 times and fended off 9 (!) breakballs.

In the second round it was Cirstea who was able to present a service breakthrough. Muchova countered promptly and then did not let herself be stopped on her way to her third Grand Slam semifinal.
