Carlos Alcaraz leaves nothing to burn in the US Open round of 16 against Matteo Arnaldi. Daniil Medvedev WINS in 4 sets.

The top 10 player

  • Carlos Alcaraz (ESP/ATP 1) sees Matteo Arnaldi (ITA/ATP 61) 6: 3, 6: 3, 6: 4
  • Daniil Medvedev (RUS/ATP 3) sees Alex De Minaur (AUS/ATP 13) 2: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1, 6: 2
  • Andrei Rublev (RUS/ATP 8) sees Jack Draper (GBR/ATP 123) 6:3, 3:6, 6:3, 6:4

defending champion Carlos Alcaráz marched into the quarterfinals at the US Open in New York. The 20-year-old Spaniard easily defeated Matteo Arnaldi in 3 sets and now has 11 consecutive wins in “Flushing Meadows”. Alcaraz didn’t have to show his best tennis against the brave but ultimately hapless Italian, who had never survived the 2nd round of a Grand Slam tournament before. After 2 very controlled sets, the Wimbledon winner suffered a phase of weakness at the beginning of the 3rd round and conceded the break to make it 1:2. The audience at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis arena in the world, was enthusiastic and longed for a 4th set. But Alcaraz, who could become the youngest two-time US Open champion in history, quickly pulled himself together. Unlike in round 3 against Brit Daniel Evans, he did not lose a set.

Daniil Medvedev initially struggled against a good Alex De Minaur in muggy and warm conditions at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, but turned it up a notch from the middle of the second set. At 4:4 he managed the break, after that the Russian didn’t look back and won in 4 rounds thanks to a significantly improved own serve. The 2021 US Open champion got his revenge on Toronto, where he recently had to congratulate De Minaur on his victory. In the quarterfinals he gets it with his compatriot and good friend Andrei Rublev to do.

Medvedev’s daughter’s godfather made it into the round of the last 8 for the 9th time in a Grand Slam tournament. The world No. 8 beat unseeded Jack Draper in 4 sets. Against the strong server from Great Britain, Rublev was a little lacking in efficiency: he only converted 4 of his 17 break chances. The Russian has not yet reached the semifinals of a major.
