Republican Ron DeSantis will announce his candidacy for the 2024 US President on the social network Twitter. An event that will certainly revive his rivalry with Donald Trump. If the two men do not share the same course, the latter two hunt on the same subjects.

Republican Ron DeSantis will announce his candidacy for the 2024 US presidential election on Wednesday during a live Twitter conversation with Elon Musk, a source close to AFP told AFP on Tuesday. This information was quickly confirmed by the boss of the social network. “I’m going to interview Ron DeSantis and he has a hell of an announcement to make,” he said in an exchange with the wall street journal.

A good communication

The conversation between the two men is scheduled for Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Washington time (22:00 GMT), and will be moderated by Republican businessman David Sacks. The 44-year-old governor of Florida is seen as Donald Trump’s main rival for the Republican nomination.

So far, no candidate has declared himself only on social networks. It is therefore a great blow for Ron DeSantis who appropriates Twitter, the network which, in 2016, had largely contributed to the triumph of Donald Trump. But for all that, the two men do not share much in common.

A ChatGPT in costume

Ron DeSantis is middle-class, Harvard-educated, and a Navy lawyer. And yet, he clearly hunts on the same lands as the former president with the war against wokism as his main concern. In his state of Florida, this ultra-conservative has passed a string of laws that prohibit talking about gender or race in school.

Put simply, DeSantis is replicating Trump’s politics, but without all the provocations, which is quite alluring to wealthy Republican supporters. And if he becomes the man to kill for the former president of the United States, Ron DeSantis is for the moment largely behind in the polls because more and more, his personality serves him. Deemed to be cold and aloof, some of its detractors called it ChatGPT in costume. A handicap that he will have to overcome if he wants to compete seriously with the showman that is Donald Trump.
