Former US President Donald Trump will not be able to appear on the ballot in Colorado during the 2024 presidential election because of his role in the events of January 6, 2021, the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday .
Donald Trump thus becomes the first presidential candidate to be deemed ineligible for the White House in the history of the United States under an article of the American Constitution prohibiting government officials who took part in “an insurrection or rebellion” to exercise their functions.
This decision only applies to the Republican primary in the state of Colorado, scheduled for March 5, but it could also affect the status of Donald Trump during the presidential election of November 5, 2024.
Donald Trump, currently favored to win the Republican nomination and face Democratic President Joe Biden in the presidential election, announced he would appeal the decision to the US Supreme Court, where he named three of the nine judges who sit there.
The Colorado Supreme Court found that the United States Constitution barred Donald Trump from appearing on the ballot because of his role in the attack on the Capitol led by his supporters on January 6, 2021.
She based her decision on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, adopted after the Civil War to prevent supporters of the Confederacy from serving in government.
