USA: Consumer confidence increases in January


January 30 (Reuters) – Consumer confidence in the United States improved a little less strongly than expected in January, shows the Conference Board’s monthly survey published on Tuesday.

The confidence index calculated by the employers’ organization stood at 114.8 compared to 108.0 in December (revised from 110.7). The consensus of economists polled by Reuters forecast a figure of 115.0.

The component of consumer judgment on the current situation stood at 161.3 compared to 147.2 last month (revised from 148.5), while that of expectations, based on short-term prospects for income, business and labor market conditions, stands at 83.8 compared to 81.9 previously (revised from 85.6).

Consumer expectations for inflation over the next year give a rate of 5.2% in January, the lowest since March 2020. (Written by Corentin Chappron, edited by Blandine Hénault)
