WASHINGTON, Sept 8 (Reuters) – U.S. jobless claims fell in the week to September 3 to 222,000 from a revised 228,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Economists expected an average of 240,000 new claims.

Registrations for the week to August 27 have been revised down slightly from an initial estimate of 232,000.

The four-week moving average is down to 233,000 from 240,500 (revised) the previous week.

On the contrary, the number of people regularly receiving benefits increased to 1.473 million during the week of August 27 (the last for which these figures are available) against 1.437 million the previous week. (Report Lucia Mutikani, French version Marc Angrand, edited by Tangi Salaün)
