US President Joe Biden (78) is serious about climate protection and sets tough goals for the US auto industry. By 2030, half of all new cars in the US should have an electric motor. This plan aims to reduce the climate-damaging CO2– Reduce emissions from passenger cars by 60 percent by 2030 compared to 2020. Biden signed a corresponding ruling today.
However, this does not only mean purely electric vehicles, but also electrified ones: in other words, those with hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fuel cell drives. In an initial statement, the US automakers Ford, General Motors and Stellantis said they would consider an electric share of 40 to 50 percent in 2030 to be realistic.
At the same time, Biden has also announced investments in electromobility in its infrastructure package. Around 6.8 billion Swiss francs are to be invested in expanding the charging network in the USA. Another 2.27 billion Swiss francs are earmarked for new electric buses. The US Senate should pass this package shortly with votes from Republicans and Democrats.
Shortly after his inauguration, Joe Biden defined the implementation of electromobility in the USA as an important building block for climate protection. He sees his country in a competition for the necessary raw materials with China.
