- Two environmental activists hurled soup at the bulletproof glass that protects the world-famous Mona Lisa on Sunday.
- Women are concerned about the right to healthy and sustainable nutrition.
Video footage shows how the two women hit the masterpiece with red soup, which was covered in protective glass. The activists had sneaked under a security barrier to get as close as possible to the painting.
In their message to museum visitors, they called for the right to a healthy and sustainable diet. The women belong to the French organization “Riposte Alimentaire”. She explained that the protest was intended to draw attention to the need to protect the environment and food sources. Louvre security guards led the women away.
The Louvre could not be reached for confirmation. The Mona Lisa has been presented behind bulletproof glass since 2005. Therefore it is not considered that it was damaged by the soup. Leonardo da Vinci’s painting has been the victim of vandalism several times. The last time a cake was thrown at the painting was in May 2022.
Climate activists repeatedly use museums for their protests
Activists have also targeted other well-known works of art in recent years to draw attention to climate change. In October 2022, soup was thrown at Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Sunflowers” in London’s National Gallery. A little later, activists stuck themselves to Goya paintings in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
