Variant prevails – Vienna: Omikron now dominates new infections

The new Omikron variant has conquered Vienna. Because, as has now become known, the majority of the positive cases in the federal capital can already be traced back to an infection with the latest mutation of the coronavirus. The next meeting of the Covid crisis coordination GECKO will take place on Monday afternoon – and Omikron is likely to be the dominant topic.

Already over the Christmas holidays, the highly infectious Omikron variant in Vienna became the dominant mutation, as the office of City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ) said on Sunday afternoon compared to the “Standard”. On Stefanitag alone, a total of 552 active Omikron cases were reported in Vienna – on the Tuesday before Christmas there were only 266. However, it must be remembered that the sequencing of the samples always takes a few days – therefore the numbers must be viewed independently of the daily new infections. Rapid increase not surprising However, the rapid increase in omicron cases is by no means surprising. The traffic light commission had already declared on December 23rd that it was assumed that the Omikron would dominate the following week and that it would lead to increasing numbers of infections, especially over the turn of the year. It is still unclear what effects this will have on hospitals. Most recently, infections with the Omicron variant were observed to be milder. If (! The state-wide Covid Crisis Coordination GECKO will meet on Monday afternoon, and a new assessment of the corona situation is planned, especially with regard to the new Omikron virus variant. Decisions by the government regarding any further measures are unlikely to be expected on Monday. The announced “test summit” will also take place at the beginning of the week. All test capacities in the country are to be examined carefully. In addition, it should be ascertained which steps are required to increase the offer.
