Venice 2023: an Oscar-winning director president of the jury of the 80th Mostra

Director Damien Chazelle, author of the recent Babylon and Oscar winner for La La Land, has just been chosen to chair the jury for the next Venice Film Festival. The festival will be held from August 30 to September 9, 2023.

After opening the Venice Film Festival in 2016 with La La Land and in 2018 for First Man, American director Damien Chazelle will be the president of the jury for this 80th edition.

According The French Movie, the director of the recent Babylon (1.5 million admissions in France) will therefore be the president responsible for presenting the supreme award, the Golden Lion. He succeeds Julianne Moore, who awarded the trophy to All the Beauty and the Bloodshed by Laura Poitras in 2022.

“Every year, for ten days, this city of the arts, of Tintoretto, Titian and Veronese, becomes a city of cinema, and it is with humility and joy that I have been invited to chair this year’s jury, said the American director in a press release. “I can’t wait to discover a new harvest of great films at the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival”said the artist.

For her part, the French filmmaker Alice Diop will be the president of the jury of the Luigi De Laurentiis section. She will present the statuette for the best first film, an award she won in 2022 for Saint Omer, in addition to the Silver Lion.

“It’s a great honour, a great joy to have been chosen to preside over the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Prize for a first film, at a festival that welcomed me and offered so much last year.

I am happy to pass the baton this year and to work for the emergence of a new voice in the cinematographic landscape that the Venice Film Festival has always sought to renew.”underlined the director.

As for the Italian filmmaker Jonas Carpignano, he will head the jury of the Orizzonti section.

“It is a great honor for me to chair the Orizzonti jury this year, and I am very grateful to the Venice Film Festival for this privilege, said the Italian screenwriter and director. Year after year, the rich and daring selection d’Orizzonti offers us a deep immersion in the world of cinema.

I look forward to experiencing the emotions and the diverse realities that we will experience in the halls of the Lido. To have the opportunity to see some of the best films of the year in one of the most beautiful places in the world is something really special”he said.

The 80th Venice Film Festival will be held from August 30 to September 9, 2023.
