It is looking for proposals and projects for the construction of berths for cruise and container ships outside the Venice lagoon, it said in a statement published on Tuesday. The aim is to reduce cruise operations in the waters of the lagoon and to protect the unique environment there.
At the beginning of April, the government in Rome had already decided to start the search for ideas by decree – actually within 60 days. Cruise ships are heavily criticized by the Venetian population because, according to activists, they are environmentally harmful and the cruise tourists populate the historic old town, but hardly leave any money there.
Unesco experts also recently suggested putting Venice on the negative list for endangered world heritage because of the multi-story ships. The organization wants to make a decision in mid-July. Amid protests by many activists, after a good one and a half years of forced Corona break, large cruise ships left Venice through the lagoon along the famous St.
Up until December 31 of this year, ideas can be presented, from which a panel of five experts will select the three best. For this purpose, feasibility plans are to be developed by December 31, 2022. The winning project should be determined by June 30, 2023. The Ministry of Infrastructure wants to provide 2.2 million euros for this.
