Venom: this memorable scene is improvised

A striking scene from the Marvel movie “Venom” was improvised on the initiative of Tom Hardy, interpreter of Eddie Brock and the anti-hero symbiote.

Tom Hardy and his good ideas! On the set of Venom, the actor, who plays the main role of the film, was at the origin of a striking sequence of the feature film, a scene which was entirely improvised!

At this point in the film, Eddie Brock (Hardy), already infected with the symbiote but not yet having met Venom, goes to a posh restaurant to see his ex-fiancée Anne, who is having lunch there with her new boyfriend. Brock arrives like a fury and turns the establishment upside down and ends up diving into a lobster tank.

In an interview with Polygon in 2018, director Ruben Fleischer returned to this comedic moment in the film, only born from the imagination of Tom Hardy:

“We rehearsed the scene for a week before the shoot because we were going to work in a real big restaurant. [répétition], Tom saw that the head decorator had put a giant lobster in an aquarium in the middle of the restaurant, and it was purely for decoration, to make it a luxury restaurant. But as soon as Tom saw it, he said, “Come on, I think I’m going to dive in.”

An idea that did not immediately receive all the votes of the team:

He was told that the aquarium was not designed to accommodate anyone, especially not with lobsters in it!

Finally, the decorators accept that the aquarium is enlarged so that the waterfall can happen safely. As for the lobsters eaten by Eddie / the Symbiote, they are actually made in marshmallow, and their blood in chocolate syrup. The magic of cinema!

Despite all the upstream preparation experienced by feature films, especially those from Hollywood studios, it is clear that it is more than ever when arriving on the set that the craziest ideas can be born, especially from the actors, like the Fleischer analysis:

No lobsters were hurt during this streak, but it’s a good example of Tom seeing an opportunity – I even forgot how the scene was originally supposed to end – and making a bold choice!

When it was released, Venom was a hit grossing $ 856 million, but the second opus, released this year, totaled “only” $ 498.1 million, well below the previous one.

Venom 2 didn’t mark the symbiote’s only screen appearance in 2021, but it looks like plans around the character have been scaled back. We explain everything in this article.
