Very convenient – Toyota makes hydrogen portable like gas cylinders

Hydrogen drives can be a way to reduce CO2 emissions in transport. The biggest obstacles are probably the lack of infrastructure and the complicated handling of hydrogen. Toyota is in the process of developing solutions and is now introducing new types of mobile tanks.

Japanese automaker and its subsidiary Woven Planet have developed the first prototype of a portable hydrogen cartridge that could be useful for a variety of everyday applications. It is portable and inexpensive and can also be taken to places that do not have hydrogen infrastructure. The prototype is 40 centimeters high and has a diameter of 18 centimeters. Toyota is aiming for a target weight of five kilograms, which corresponds to a small standard gas bottle. Feasibility studies are planned for the next step, including in the model city of Woven City, which is currently being built near Susono in the Japanese prefecture of Shizuoka. The partners involved are looking for practical solutions on the way to a CO2-neutral city. In order to further improve the product, the experts are working on handling and expanding the energy density in the cartridge. The prototype of the portable hydrogen cartridge will be presented at the Fuji 24 Hours this weekend. (awm)
