Very upper middle class: The Vivo X51 is a stylish camera professional

The Vivo X51 5G is an exciting smartphone newcomer to the German market, because it offers one of the most extraordinary camera equipment that can currently be found in a mid-range smartphone. But that has its price and much cheaper devices don't take much worse photos.

Most German users are probably not yet familiar with Vivo. But that is not because the Chinese company is a nobody. After all, with a market share of around 8 percent, it was the sixth largest smartphone manufacturer in the world in the past quarter, and in Asia it is already one of the top 3. Now Vivo wants to conquer the European market and is sending an exciting mid-range with the XP51 5G. Smartphone with top-class camera equipment into the race.

The display is impressive.

In terms of design, the Vivo XP51 is another device with curved glass surfaces that merge into a shiny metal frame. The matte, gray-blue back is nice and not only looks good, but is also insensitive to streaks. The workmanship looks very high quality, but the device is not waterproof.

Nice display, good performance

The 6.65-inch AMOLED display with integrated fingerprint sensor is an eye-catcher. With the Full HD + resolution, it is sharp enough and offers strong contrasts and colors. It can also shine very brightly and, at 90 Hertz (Hz), offers a higher refresh rate than the usual 60 Hz. And because the front camera snaps through a small hole, it takes up almost the entire front. The smartphone, which weighs almost 182 grams, is still quite handy despite the large screen.

Qualcomm's strong mid-range chip Snapdragon 765G works under the hood. It has already proven in other 5G smartphones that it is a successful mixture of performance and economy. Together with 8 gigabytes (GB) of RAM, it shows no weaknesses in everyday life and also takes part in a few more demanding games. You can't complain about a generous 256 GB of flash memory either.

The battery has a fairly high capacity of 4315 mAh, which the device can easily get through the day. The battery can be refilled very quickly with the included 35 watt power adapter, but the Vivo X51 does not offer inductive charging.

Quadruple camera with gimbal

The quadruple camera on the back makes the smartphone extraordinary. The centerpiece is a 48-megapixel main camera, which, in addition to optical stabilization, also has a gimbal. This not only enables beautiful night shots by hand, the technology also enables extremely quiet video recordings. In daylight, the main notch provides many details, natural colors and strong contrasts. In low light, however, recordings are a little too noisy.

The ultra-wide-angle camera produces good images with 8 megapixels without being particularly shiny. The software sometimes exaggerates with her – as with the main camera – and the photos then appear slightly over-sharpened. In low light, the 120-degree camera quickly reaches its limits. On the other hand, it shines as a really good macro camera.

Interestingly, the Vivo X51 has a special portrait camera that is the equivalent of a 50 millimeter lens. It does a very good job with 13 megapixels and a double optical magnification and creates a nice artificial bokeh.

Another highlight is the periscope telephoto camera, which offers five times optical magnification. As long as you stay in this area, the photos look great. Tenx zoom is still okay, and the quality is visibly reduced. This is mainly due to the low 8 megapixel resolution.

Successful, but too expensive

The bottom line is that the Vivo X51 is a very interesting mid-range smartphone that stands out from the crowd with its lavish camera equipment. The video stabilization by the gimbal in particular makes the device unique. However, the price of around 800 euros is too high. Because there are already some interesting 5G smartphones with hardly any weaker features that are much cheaper. The OnePlus Nord, for example, only costs 400 euros. There is more power and a 120 Hertz display with the OnePlus 8T, which is available from 600 euros.
