On this beach, it is the second landslide in less than a month, rock having already released the cliff on December 5 in impressive proportions. “This is the first time that I have seen a landslide of this magnitude in the town. Ninety meters long by fifty meters wide and almost four meters high, ”Raphaël Lesueur, mayor of Le Tilleul, told our colleagues from France 3 Normandy.

Coastline erosion sign

A few days after the first landslide, the mayor had issued an order forbidding anyone to travel at the foot of the cliffs of Tilleul.

The event once again highlights the erosion of the coastline on the Normandy coast. According to Franceinfo, the cliff recedes on average 20 cm per year, nibbled at its feet by the waves and victim of infiltration from above. An average of 60 landslides are recorded each year in the area.
