Invited on March 8, 2024 at Headingley Stadium in Leeds as part of the Women’s Rights Day celebrations, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh and his wife Duchess Sophie made a most moving appearance on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the brother of King Charles III. Moved, Sophie wanted to pay tribute to her husband in a speech given to the many guests present for the event. A magnificent declaration of love which somewhat embarrassed the Duke, who is not always very comfortable when it comes to receiving compliments.

Having become president of the Community Sport and Recreation Alliance in 2009, Prince Edward was able to listen to his wife – they married in 1999 – declare all her admiration and tenderness.has [son] beloved husband” : “Without looking at him, I assume he is now sitting with slightly narrowed eyes, perhaps with his arms crossed, or one arm outstretched on the table” she announced straight away with accuracy, proof that she knows perfectly well the man she married 25 years ago.

First talking about her father-in-law, Philip Mountbatten, she confides: “I spoke twice about the late Duke of Edinburgh in his presence, each time feeling like I was about to jump out of a plane without a parachute, but keeping it vague hope for a soft landing. You have to understand that my father-in-law never liked being complimented, believing that it is the organizations he supports that are important, not him.“Character traits that Prince Edward seems to have inherited, a man she is”so proud“.

A man who gives “150%”

Whatever he does, he gives 150% of himself, and if all else fails, he gives whatever energy he has left to our exhausted dogs or the desolation of the garden. Like my father-in-law, my husband never looks for compliments. So when he gets recognition, it’s always a total surprise for him. That’s why I’m grateful for this opportunity to be able, for once, to be able to publicly celebrate and compliment him. (…) He deserves both in equal measure and I am so proud of the man he is. He is the best father, the most loving husband and still my best friend. So, this is my dear Edward and may I, along with all your family and so many friends and many more, wish you the happiest of birthdays!” she confided, provoking her husband’s tearswith whom she will celebrate her silver wedding anniversary this year.
