Finally summer, finally ice: Especially when we spend more time in the garden and on the balcony than in other years, it is practical to have a delicious ice cream in the freezer. The prices of vanilla ice cream differ widely – but are the differences between cheap ice cream and luxury products really so big that you notice the difference? The large comparison of the Stiftung Warentest comes to a surprising result.
"Ice cream" or "ice cream"?
The difference in price is already noticeable by whether the container is talking about "ice cream" or "ice cream". "Ice cream" is a pure milk product; "Ice cream" also contains vegetable fats, which often cause a higher cholesterol level. Other supposed quality features do not automatically indicate that the ice cream is of higher quality. A vanilla ice cream with a strong yellow tinge is not a sign that there is more vanilla – the color is often simply created using dyes that are added to the ice cream mix during production. The black dots, which seem to be due to vanilla pods in the ingredients, can also be fraudulent: some manufacturers give their ice cream the "points bonus", even if only flavors were used.
Is expensive really better?
But is a higher price actually an indication of higher quality? To find out, the Stiftung Warentest thoroughly tested a total of 19 types of vanilla ice cream – including products that were lactose-free or even vegan. In fact, this test clearly shows that it is worthwhile for vanilla ice cream connoisseurs to invest more money. The test winner is also pretty much the most expensive ice cream on the market. But surprisingly in third place is an extremely cheap discounter ice cream that offers ice cream fans excellent quality. In the video you can see the results at a glance!
