Vikings Valhalla: End after season 3 confirmed! Not a Netflix hit?

VIKINGS: VALHALLA

“Vikings: Valhalla” ends on Netflix after season 3. A considerable length for a series in the streaming age, but was the “Vikings” spin-off a hit or a flop?

  • The story of Leif, Harald and Freydis ends on Netflix in 2024.
  • “Vikings: Valhalla” Season 3 will be the finale of the series, making it a total of 24 episodes.
  • Netflix doesn’t seem to be particularly happy with “Vikings: Valhalla”, as further seasons were once discussed.

“Vikings: Valhalla” is a big mystery. At first glance, Netflix’s “Vikings” spin-off seems like a great success, after all, the streaming service extended the series for a second and third season.

In fact, Netflix ordered 24 episodes right from the start, which were to be spread over three seasons; the first two seasons were even shot one after the other. This reduced production costs, at least the sets, costumes and actors didn’t have to be reorganized again and again.

Was this ending really planned?

With the third season, which will be released in 2024, “Vikings: Valhalla” will reach the end of the episodes confirmed from the beginning – and at the same time the end of the series itself. In a statement from series creator Jeb Stuart it says:

I’m so grateful that I had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald and Freydis. I knew from the start that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today, and we did exactly that.

Of course, with real historical figures there are always more aspects of their lives that could be explored, but it made sense story-wise for Leif, Freydis and Harald’s journeys to end with our third season. And we can’t wait for fans to see the conclusion of this chapter of the story.

Stuart’s statements suggest that the end of “Vikings: Valhalla” after season 3 was planned from the beginning, but Godwin actor David Oakes is already revealing in 2022 that the storyline for his character has already been set for 5 seasons. So what’s true?

“Vikings: Valhalla” is probably not successful enough to justify a further extension. Fans can at least take comfort in the knowledge that Netflix didn’t cancel the series shortly after the start of season 3, but rather informed Jeb Stuart in good time so that he could give “Vikings: Valhalla” a well-rounded ending.

The new pictures not only indicate a tragic end for Freydis, they also show series newcomer Goran Višnjić for the first time. The “Emergency Room” star plays the legendary explorer “Erik the Red”, the father of Leif and Freydis.

Since the first season of “Vikings: Valhalla” appeared in February 2022 and season 2 followed in January 2023, the third season is expected to start in early 2024.
