Shoes created by Virgil Abloh have now been auctioned for a record price.

200 pairs of sneakers designed by the recently deceased designer Virgil Abloh have been auctioned for around 22 million euros.

200 pairs of sneakers created by the late designer Virgil Abloh (1980-2021) are changing hands for a total of around 22 million euros. This was at an auction of the auction house Sotheby’s reached eight times the estimated price. The shoes were a collaboration between luxury label Louis Vuitton and sporting goods manufacturer Nike. Abloh was the artistic director of the French fashion house until his death.

The shoes are crafted from calf leather and decorated with Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram. Proceeds go to an Abloh charitable fund that funds scholarships for Black, African American, and African students. The designer died of cancer at the age of 41 and before his death he was involved in the preparations for the Sotheby’s auction in New York.

Auction house feels honored

The auction house announced that the proceeds were a record for a charity auction. In addition, never before had such a high price been achieved at fashion auctions. Charles F. Stewart, head of Sotheby’s, said in a statement, according to US media, that his house was honored to be a partner of Louis Vuitton and Nike in this special auction. The global turnout is unprecedented and a testament to Abloh’s legacy as one of the most visionary artists and designers of his generation.
