Volkswagen ID.1: the rival of the €20,000 electric Renault Twingo will arrive in 2027

We know more and more about Volkswagen’s strategy to democratize electric cars. The manufacturer will initially market an electric city car at around €25,000 excluding bonuses, prefigured by the ID concept. 2all, to compete with the Renault 5 E-Tech electric. It will be launched in 2026 and followed by an even less expensive electric mini-city car, at almost €20,000 excluding bonuses this time, in order to take the place of the e-up! and compete with the future electric Renault Twingo, which will be born in 2026.

Among the many unknowns, we did not yet know when Volkswagen hoped to launch this second affordable electric car, which we already nicknamed ID.1. It is now done, since Thomas Schäfer, the CEO of the Volkswagen brand, has indicated a release date planned for 2027, reports Reuters.

What will it look like?

Four project teams are said to be already working on proposals for the vehicle, which therefore still remains quite mysterious. Kai Grünitz, head of technical development at Volkswagen, had already announced that “the ID.1 will be close to the up! regarding the use of this car”. It could also abandon the latest on-board technologies: “Maybe you could bring your own device in this car instead of having a huge infotainment system, or something like that”indicated Kai Grünitz.

On the question of the platform used, there are also doubts since it should be different from the MEB Entry of the ID.2. Discussions took place with Renault for a possible partnership between the two groups in order to pool part of the technological development. The latest news was that an agreement between Volkswagen and Renault was not excluded, without any confirmation. The project is therefore taking shape little by little, but many gray areas remain.
