The canton of Solothurn is to build a new detention center for 120 million. There is also criticism of this plan.
The two previous remand prisons in Solothurn and Olten are old and small. The government and cantonal parliament therefore want to replace them with a new building. The voters will now decide on a loan of 120 million francs.
After the first municipalities counted, there is clear agreement. The proportion of yes votes is currently 59 percent. However, the results from the larger communities are still missing.

The new remand prison is to be built in Deitingen, next to the existing correctional facility. The construction costs were discussed in parliament. In the end, only the SVP voted unanimously against the loan, the FDP partially abstained.
Critics speak of a “luxury prison”
The government council found that the previous remand prisons were too small and no longer up to date. You are reaching capacity limits. The conditions are untenable for the prisoners and also the staff.
The critics speak of a “luxury prison”. They are bothered by the high construction and operating costs. Over 28 million francs a year is too expensive. The canton is currently building or planning too many large projects. In addition, too much agricultural land is being used for the prison.
