A record increase in the use of vpn
amounting to 2,088% compared to the average demand, was recorded in Russia by the site Top10VPN on March 13.
A target of Western sanctions, Russia has blocked more than 300 websites disseminating war-related information, including the notorious social networks Meta, Instagram and Facebook. This has prompted users to circumvent this restriction by using VPNs.
Russia tightens censorship
On the night of March 13, Roskomnadzor, the Russian telecommunications policeman, published a list of sites that had become inaccessible in Russia. The latter are accused of spreading calls for violence in opposition to the war in Ukraine. Among these are the Instagram and Facebook platforms.
Facebook was initially partially banned in Russia, as Russian state media channels were restricted by Meta. Then, while the blue-thumb network announced that it would allow posts containing violent remarks against Russian soldiers, Moscow decided to completely ban the group’s social networks.
Following these events, the use of tools for bypassing web restrictions has only increased, reaching record highs. In addition, other news websites and other media including content related to the Ukrainian war such as BBC News, Deutsche Welle or Voice of America were banished by Russia, closing the country even more in on itself.
