VR and AI: two new therapeutic tools for astronaut well-being

A French startup, Coreod Space, has just presented its AI-powered VR headset, the SAT (Space Agent Traveler). The latter is designed to improve the psychological well-being of astronauts during their missions.

This won’t be the first time a VR headset has been considered as a therapeutic tool. If there’s one area where mental health matters at least as much as physical fitness, it’s space exploration. Astronauts, during their missions, are in unique conditions which can be anxiety-provoking. It is based on this observation that Coreod Space has developed an innovative solution through the SAT. A technology that aims to “ stimulate the cognitive and neuropsychological functions of astronauts, helping them survive and thrive during their space missions » according to Dr. Elise Jabès, founder and CEO of Coreod Space.

The SAT helmet goes beyond a simple object to reduce stress for individuals. Powered by AI, it is capable of offering a tailor-made solution to each user.

The SAT: revolutionizing space exploration with AI and VR

This headset is capable of creating an immersive experience so that its users’ brains adapt. By stimulating the cognitive functions of the brain, the device is likely to promote neuroplasticity so that it adapts to simulated environments. As all protocols are unique to each user, it is a real support for space professionals. The first tests, carried out at the International Spatial Neuropsychology Research Laboratory (Lirnas), show very positive results so far. Among the subjects tested, they noted mental calm increased by 97%, improved sleep by 42% and anxiety and stress reduced by 45%.

A marked difference from other VR solutions

Other solutions of the same type exist, including one offered by the manufacturer HTC. But Jabès believes that the SAT is more appropriate. Indeed, the solution developed by HTC must be done with their headset. She explains that “ their solution requires the installation of a functional VR headset in space and in zero G, which can lead to motion sickness [mal des transports] “.

The advantage of the SAT is its compatibility and versatility. “ We offer software that integrates any VR headset already used in space » adds Jabès. Another big difference is that the SAT offers immersive protocols, and not interactive ones; “ no motion sickness during or after use » adds the founder of Coreod Space.

AI and neuroplasticity for emotional well-being

If the SAT is as effective as Dr. Jabès seems to describe, it is because it is designed in a very specific way. “ We use a combination of audio (sounds, voices, words) and visual (colors, images, videos) elements to specifically stimulate neural waves tailored to specific themes, the goal being to modify existing thought patterns by modifying circuits neurons in the brain » she explains.
