It is part of the basic equipment of every windsurfer, is considered an iconic car of the flower power generation and is still very popular with campers today: the VW bus or transporter, better known as the “Bulli”. A fully electric variant is now coming onto the market. COMPUTER BILD presents the VW ID.Buzz.
VW ID.Buzz: Electric homage to the T1
Volkswagen very consciously wants to tie in with the origins of the Bulli and praises the ID.Buzz as a homage to the T1 – the first VW bus. It will be available in two versions: as ID.Buzz with bench seats and as ID.Buzz Cargo with a large loading area as a pure transporter. The built-in battery has a capacity of 82 kilowatt hours, of which around 77 kilowatt hours can be used. The battery powers a 150-kilowatt motor that drives the rear axle. The ID.Buzz charges with up to 11 kilowatts at the house socket or the city charging station; up to 170 kilowatts are available via CCS connector.
ID.Buzz: Plenty of space for passengers and luggage
The interior should be futuristic and comfortable at the same time. Up to five people can be accommodated in the two rows of seats. Their luggage can be accommodated in the generous storage space, which has a volume of 1,121 litres. Folding down the rear seat creates a loading area with a volume of 2,205 litres. If you need more space, you have to be patient: Volkswagen will bring a longer version with up to seven seats by 2024 at the latest.
Volkswagen ID.Buzz: bus on the MEB platform
Like the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5, the ID.Buzz is also based on Volkswagen’s modular MEB platform. The technical equipment is therefore comparable to that of the electric vehicles from Wolfsburg that are already available. This also includes over-the-air updates to keep the control software up to date. In contrast to other e-cars from VW, the ID.Buzz also has many design elements that are intended to remind you of the good old original Bulli, the T1. This includes, for example, the side and seat panels, which Volkswagen says were designed with great attention to detail in order to carry the Bulli feeling into modern times.
ID.Buzz: Made in Germany
The new ID.Buzz and ID.Buzz Cargo models are produced at VW’s main commercial vehicle plant in Hanover. The majority of the electric ID.Buzz drive modules supplied are also manufactured in Germany with the highest quality standards. The modules are made in the component plants in Kassel, Braunschweig, Salzgitter and Hanover. This includes the electric motor, the battery system and the axles.
VW ID.Buzz: availability, price
The VW ID.Buzz will be launched in Germany in autumn 2022. The company will announce final prices at the start of sales, but they should start at around 63,000 euros. In 2023, Wolfsburg wants to present the version with a long wheelbase, which will be available for purchase in 2024.
