Kohfeldt wins his job final

After seven defeats in the Bundesliga, Werder Bremen also loses in the DFB Cup semi-finals. A bitter evening for the Hanseatic League, but coach Kohfeldt is the winner from the game. Because his team shows that it stands behind him and his philosophy.

A winner and a winner in what ended up being a dramatic cup thriller – in the semifinals between Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig, the focus was primarily on coaches Julian Nagelsmann and Florian Kohfeldt. While Nagelsmann is still heading for his first title win with Leipzig after moving into the final for the DFB Cup and before moving to FC Bayern Munich, Kohfeldt emerged from the semi-final defeat, although bent, but also strengthened. Despite the 1: 2 after extra time, the 38-year-old remains coach of SV Werder Bremen late on Friday evening and should keep the Hanseatic League in the Bundesliga.

The Werder coach crept off the pitch with his head bowed and was “bitterly” disappointed after the cup was knocked out. “The team’s performance was outstanding, but there is still a lot of sadness today,” said Kohfeldt after the third semi-final defeat of his time in Bremen. And yet the Werder coach was also a winner. Because of the courageous performance of his team, Kohfeldt will also be on the bench against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a week. “Florian will remain a coach. We believe that in this constellation we can achieve our goal of staying up in the league,” said Sport Managing Director Frank Baumann.

Kohfeldt convinced of relegation

Werder showed a greatly improved appearance after seven league defeats in a row. The club management had taken time to analyze the difficult sporting situation in the past week and only then stuck to Kohfeldt. “We expected a reaction from the team, it was there,” said Baumann: “It was a completely different spirit on the pitch, a completely different passion to really get into the duels and win them.”

Kohfeldt was relieved that things would continue for him on the Weser. “I’m happy because I am absolutely convinced that we can keep the class,” said the 38-year-old: “A team like the one they played today cannot have a fundamental problem with the coach.”

The pressure on Julian Nagelsmann was also great before the game. The move to FC Bayern Munich in the summer did not increase his sympathy values. RB boss Oliver Mintzlaff had demanded Nagelsmann’s title after the change was announced. Now the coach and his team are just missing one victory. In the final in Berlin on May 13th, the winner of the second semi-final between Borussia Dortmund and the second division Holstein Kiel, which takes place this Saturday (8.30 p.m.), will be played. “The title would of course be the icing on the cake,” said Nagelsmann.
