The variant zombies, which appeared in episode 19 of the final season of “Walking Dead”, have been present in the horror series since the first season of the program!
Episode 19 of the final season of Walking Dead was marked by the arrival in the series of new zombies; Equipped with physical abilities such as climbing over obstacles and opening doors, these Undead 2.0 pose a whole new kind of threat to our surviving heroes.
However, contrary to popular belief, these variants do not come out of nowhere. As proof, walkers of this type have already appeared in the horror series… from the first season of the program! Indeed, from the first episodes of Walking Dead, a walker had managed to grab a stone on the ground to break the ice of a glass door.
Another case of variant zombie was encountered in the first season, in the episode which saw Rick Grimes meet Morgan, and his son Duane. Entrenched in their house, the latter observe via a surveillance camera the zombie of Morgan’s wife trying to open the main door of the home.
Again, the fact of knowing the operating system of a door handle, but also of maintaining memories of its previous life, suggests that the latter also belongs to the category of variant zombies!

The appearance of these new walkers will therefore have made it possible both to introduce a new mortal danger during this final season of The Walking Dead, but also to correct a script inconsistency in the first season of the program; we now understand better why some zombies act differently from others, although the origins of this variant remain unclear for the time being.
