(Reuters) – The New York Stock Exchange opened lower as the ECB’s three-quarter point hike and Jerome Powell’s comments failed to encourage investors to buy.
In early trading, the Dow Jones index lost 243.52 points, or 0.77%, to 31,337.76 points.
The European Central Bank (ECB) on Thursday raised its interest rates by three quarters of a point, an unprecedented measure, and said it expected further hikes in the coming months, giving priority to the fight against inflation. despite the risk of a recession in the euro zone this winter.
Markets are anticipating a similar hike from the Fed at its September 21 meeting.
