Wanted to catch sheep – fell to his death in front of his brother

A tragic accident happened on Tuesday in the area of the Kleiner Reisseck in Carinthia. Two brothers wanted to secure a sheep that had climbed into the rocks, when one of the men fell fatally.

The two brothers from the Spittal an der Drau district had been looking for missing sheep in the area of the Radlgraben (Reißeck group) since the early hours of the morning. A sheep got lost in the Radlsee area in a rock gully that was difficult to access. In order to be able to rescue the sheep, they set up a temporary abseiling station at 2540 meters above sea level. The 38-year-old brother abseiled down. After he reached the sheep, it ran towards the 43-year-old brother. When he wanted to catch the sheep, the accident happened. The 43-year-old may have lost his balance and fell to his death over a 45-meter-high rock face. The shocked brother started the rescue chain. Unfortunately, after the arrival of the emergency doctor, only the death of the 43-year-old could be determined. “We had the sad task of recovering the body and then flying the shocked brother to a hut,” reports Horst Wohlgemuth from the Spittal Alpine Police, who was also deployed with the Libelle police helicopter. The 38-year-old was accompanied to the valley by the Lieser-Maltatal mountain rescue service.
