War in Ukraine: “It is possible that the worst is ahead of us”, fears Jean-Yves Le Drian

While the Russian army surrounded several Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kiev, Jean-Yves Le Drian, French Foreign Minister, expressed concern about the evolution of the war currently unfolding in Ukraine.

“It is possible that the worst is ahead of us”, he declared this Thursday during an intervention on France 2.

The head of French diplomacy judged that one “could fear a logic of siege”, to which “the Russians are accustomed”, as was the case “in Aleppo and Grozny”.

A new call for a ceasefire

According to Jean-Yves Le Drian, “the history of Donbass and the two republics of Donetsk and Lugansk” was “only an alibi” allowing Vladimir Putin to wage war in Ukraine.

A “pretext” for the Russian president to “avoid that there are democratic models at his doorstep which can possibly influence the evolution of Russia”, analyzed the French minister.

The latter took advantage of his speech to call, again, for a ceasefire prior to any negotiation. A second session is to be held this Thursday in Belarus between Russia and Ukraine.
