War in Ukraine: the chilling testimony of the aunt of the French journalist killed by the Russian army

Photographer and cameraman mobilized in Ukraine, Pierre Zakrzewski, was killed by the Russian army on Tuesday March 15, 2022. While her nephew spoke to her regularly about her job, she revealed: “Since he was in Ukraine, Since February, we have had WhatsApp messages every day on the family conversation. Of course, it was quite quick, but he really told us about his daily life, because Pierre was not just a cameraman who had interviews with political eminences. He lived a lot of people’s daily life, in particular, he did a lot of interviews with civilians and he shared them with us as much as he could.“

Referring to what Pierre Zakrzewski told them about the situation on site, Marie-Caroline Husson explained: “He said it was terrible, especially when in Irpin, he sent us photos of the bridge that was blown up, and that people were rushing into the station with just their clothes on their backs to flee. He was regularly asked when he intended to return since his team of twelve people had been reduced to five and he said that he would return, but that for the moment he felt the responsibility not to let go of the Ukrainians and that he had to testify . He was a great professional who had kept all his sensitivity and he made it his duty to testify, to inform people as closely as possible.“Moved, the cameraman’s aunt slipped about who was one of these ‘discreet heroes’: “Pierre was a very humble person and it’s true that, for example, he spent a few days with us in January because my brother, his uncle and godfather died. He took the time to come for a few days to accompany her in these last moments, and at no time did we talk about everything he was doing. He never told us about this distinction.“

Marie-Caroline Husson: “He wanted to testify until the end”

Faced with Jean-Marc Morandini, Pierre Zakrzewski’s aunt indicated that the latter was aware of the risks. “Yes of course, but always he said he was protected by his grandmother and that the family protect him. His brothers and sisters were very worried, his wife, Michelle, very worried, his mother of course… Yes, he was aware of it, but he was a great professional, ethical and who wanted to testify until the end. When we asked him: ‘When are you coming back?’ All these messages started with ‘All is well, everything is going well’ and afterwards, he shared with us more personal anecdotes that he had experienced, but when he said ‘Everything is fine, everything is going well’, we felt that in any case, he was well aware of taking risks“, she let go.
