Washington approves sale of 116 additional Abrams tanks to Poland


The United States has approved the sale to Poland of an additional 116 American Abrams main battle tanks and other heavy armaments for a total of $3.75 billion after having already purchased 250 in April, it announced on Tuesday (December 6th). the US State Department.

Poland wishes to acquire 116 Abrams tanks in their modernized version (M1A1), 12 M88A2 Hercules rescue vehicles, 8 M1110 mobile assault bridges capable of carrying tanks across rivers, around fifty light vehicles and light weapons and their ammunition , for a total amount of 3.75 billion dollars, according to American diplomacy.

The sale will have to be approved by Washington

This sale of sensitive equipment previously had to be approved by the US government, and Congress has been notified, the State Department said in a statement. “This sale project will strengthen Poland’s ability to respond to present and future threats by providing it with a credible force capable of deterring adversaries and participating in NATO operations”the statement added.

Poland, a country bordering Ukraine invaded by Russia, has already bought in April 250 Abrams tanks and other recovery tanks, assault bridges, training and logistics systems as well as a serious quantity of ammunition, for $4.74 billion.
