“Jawan” opened in theaters in September 2023 and grossed more than $140 million at the international box office. Now the action hit with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has finally landed on Netflix. Fans of “Pathaan” and “RRR” can look forward to an adrenaline-filled fireworks display in a class of its own!

This is how you watch “Jawan” on Netflix in Germany!

Although “Jawan” is already available on Netflix, you probably won’t find the film in the streaming service’s lineup. This is because the film does not have a German dubbed version or German subtitles. In order for “Jawan” to still be shown to you, you have to set the display language of your Netflix profile to English!

The film is about Azad (SRK), who is a guard in a women’s prison and deals with corruption and social injustice in his free time, but not just on paper. Azad attracts media attention with train hijackings and blackmail and forces the government to finally act.

Director Atlee skillfully stages Shah Rukh Khan and lets him jump from one action scene to the next, always followed by musical interludes, as one would expect from traditional masala cinema. “Jawan” celebrates Shah Rukh Khan as a heroic superstar. The film is an action-fest that wants to be consumed as a popcorn blockbuster. However, the film does not forget to highlight the social injustice in today’s Indian society.

Of course, in many places it remains superficial and the film wants to push the tear duct a little too much instead of evoking “real emotions”, but that’s basically not what the film is about. Atlee wants to put his finger on the wounds, at times cynically and bitterly evil, but at the same time be as entertaining as possible, so that at times it is forgotten how political the film actually is in many places.

“Jawan” never forgets to be fun and can almost be reminiscent of anime adaptations with its exaggerated and comic-like action, especially when Shah Rukh Khan’s second role, Vikram Rathore, appears – that’s right, SRK can be seen in a double role, as father and son .

Who knew we needed a grey-haired, full-bearded, cigar-smoking Shah Rukh Khan, blurring the lines between hilarious and ass-cool with a saw and a whip-like belt to beat up the bad guys!

Anyone who has not yet dared to approach Indian cinema will find “Jawan” a crazy and suitable introduction. Anyone who now knows a little about Indian cinema can look forward to famous guest stars like Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Dutt.

Jawan on Netflix: This is how Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan brings the most important hero of Indian cinema from the 70s into the here and now!

What makes “Jawan” so special is the fact that Azad, the film’s hero, acts in morally dubious ways and has to go beyond the bounds of legality to achieve true justice. Law and justice are not always one in the same.

By becoming an action hero who gathers a colorful group of young women from the women’s prison to stand up for what is right and justice outside the law, Shah Rukh Khan also mobilizes the people and inspires them with media attention for his cause.

This aspect is reminiscent of the “Angry Young Man”, who was the most important hero of Indian cinema in the 1970s and appeared as the alter ego of actor Amitabh Bachchan in various films and always followed the same patterns.

Due to social injustice and the absence of his parents, or at least his father, the Angry Young Man had to become a criminal. He mobilized various people from different social classes and fought against the corrupt system.

In the 1970s, India became a dictatorship virtually overnight due to a state of emergency declared by Indira Gandhi, and the anger of the people was reflected in the wrath of the Angry Young Man. Now the Angry (not quite so anymore) Young Man returns and his anger resonates with a new generation of angry people.

Be it equality between men and women, tax breaks for the upper class while the middle and lower classes can barely afford to live, or simply the corruption that can be found in various sectors of the government institution, “Jawan” tackles these issues and goes along with them in anger against them.

An action fireworks display with a nostalgic flair and a strong pinch of socially critical anger

With “Jawan”, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan finally becomes an action star after “Pathaan” in 2023 and leaves behind the romantic streak that made him famous. Director Atlee puts SRK into explosive action and ensures an adrenaline rush that we otherwise only know from exaggerated anime, while sprinkling a huge pinch of anger about corruption and social injustice into his film.
