Watchmaker Seiko at Studio Ghibli time

The world of Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animated film production company created in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, is a limitless source of inspiration. In 2022, the Spanish brand Loewe signed a collaboration featuring the characters from the film Spirited away (2001) on immediately desirable accessories.

This season, the Japanese watchmaker Seiko is turning to the founding film of Studio Ghibli, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, released on screens in 1984. Its success led to the birth of the production company the following year.

An intrepid warrior, the young princess Nausicaä leads a fierce fight against the invaders, in a world which has seen the Earth disintegrate under the effects of human pollution. It’s in the collection Presage Craftmanshipwhich highlights watchmaking craftsmanship, that this timepiece finds its place.

Excerpt from the film “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (1984), by Hayao Miyazaki.

The dial is in blue enamel, with a red symbol at 6 o’clock, reminiscent of one of the heroine’s outfits. The strap is in grained leather and embossed with an ohmu, this giant and terrifying insect, which is at the center of the plot of the film, while, on the back of the case – which allows you to see the golden oscillating weight of the movement in transparency –, it is a nod to the final scene which emerges: the blossoming of a majestic plant on a golden earth evoking the rebirth of the world. A happy ending for a timeless, limited edition object.
