Globally, children in South Asia suffer the most from water scarcity. A total of 347 million children are affected, according to an analysis by the children’s charity Unicef.
South Asia is the most populous region in the world. Overall, a quarter of the world’s children live in South Asia, but at the same time there is only four percent of the world’s water there. “Safe water is a basic human right, but millions of children in South Asia do not have enough to drink in a region plagued by floods, drought and other extreme weather events increasingly triggered by climate change,” said the region’s representative Quoting Unicef boss Sanjay Wijesekera.
Positive future prospects
Ahead of the UN climate conference in Dubai at the end of the month, Unicef is calling on the international community to act. A planet worth living in should be secured for children. Water scarcity affects the well-being and growth of children. It creates food insecurity, malnutrition and illnesses such as diarrhea.
There is also positive news from the analysis. According to Unicef forecasts, access to drinking water in South Asia is likely to continue to improve rapidly in the coming years.
