Wave of cancellations on ARD & ZDF: The seventh show is being removed from the program – in order to attract young viewers

ENTERTAINMENT

In order to win over young people, public broadcasters want to produce new programs. The necessary budget is obtained through a series of deductions.

Today’s youth consists of tomorrow’s broadcaster fee payers. The public broadcasters therefore want to tap into this target group, which is new to them, before the reputation of the pensioner broadcaster has already become too established.

ARD, ZDF, WDR and Co. want to appeal primarily to young people with new programs that are produced specifically for the Internet. However, this is only possible by saving money elsewhere. For this reason, we are currently experiencing the seventh cancellation within just a few months.

Deposed, but not disappeared

WDR ended production of “Planet Wissen” at the end of 2023. At this point, the knowledge magazine had been running on various public broadcasters for over 21 years. The last episode was broadcast on SWR last year, and on WDR it will be on January 12, 2024.

“Planet Wissen” will not disappear completely, because WDR and ARD alpha are still sticking to repeats – this way, slots can be filled cost-effectively. Previously, “People Today”, “Last Trace Berlin”, “SOKO Hamburg”, “ARD Büffet”, “Hauptsache Gesund” and “Drehscheibe” were canceled.

Apart from the content from the “funk” category, the offering for a younger target group is still manageable. The SWR, which completely removed “Planet Wissen” from the program, did not fill the vacant space with a fresh youth program, but with repeats of “Railroad Romance” and “Crazy for Trains”.
