It’s official: Mario now has a new voice! And early fans shouldn’t be too confused.

On August 21, Charles Martinet announced that he was retiring and that he would no longer play the emblematic characters of the series. Super Mario. Notably known for having voiced Mario and Luigi for several decades, we wondered who could possibly have the heavy responsibility of donning the cap and overalls of our favorite mustachioed plumbers.

A few days before the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder on Nintendo Switch, we now know the identity of who will take over the role. If his name is certainly not familiar to you, his voice should remind you of the old voice of… Mario!

Mario finds a new voice, but it’s (almost) as if nothing has changed

After almost 30 years spent lending his voice to the emblematic and inseparable characters of Big N, the time has officially come for Charles Martinet to pass on the baton. It is therefore Kevin Afghani who will be tasked with taking on the role of Mario and Luigi in their next adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom (and beyond!).

In a message published on X.com, the actor, notably known for having lent his voice to Raditz in the series Dragon Ball R&Ror even to Arnold in the video game Genshin Impact, expresses his pride and gratitude to Nintendo for this great opportunity. Here is what he declares, not without emotion: “ I’m incredibly proud to have voiced Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Thanks to Nintendo for inviting me to the kingdom of flowers ! »

And for the most impatient among you who would like to discover the sound of his voice without further delay, know that you can already hear it in the video above, recently published on Nintendo’s YouTube channel. Rest assured: Mario seems to still have good years ahead of him in the hands (and vocal cords) of Kevin Afghani.
