We know the French’s favorite fruits and vegetables (and no, it’s not bananas!): Femme Actuelle Le MAG

It’s a subject that comes up quite often, and which health professionals regularly warn about: we don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables every day. Are you in this situation? Has it even become your good resolution to keep for the year 2024? You may be part of the French average. Indeed, while WHO recommends consumption per capita per day of 400 grams, France is only at 321 gramsaccording to the graph within the Bona Fidé study, carried out from January 26 to 29, 2024 for Interfel (on a sample of 4,000 people, representative of national populations aged 18 and over) and unveiled at the Salon de l’Agriculture.

And if France is a bad student when it comes to this subject, it still seems enjoy certain fruits and vegetables in particular. Thus, the survey affirms that, on the French side, it is respectively carrots, potatoes and finally green beans which are on the podium. Europeans (the survey was also carried out in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy) prefer broccoli, salad and tomatoes. Whatever the nationality, when we talk about fruits, however, everyone seems to agree that the apple is preferred over everything. It is closely followed by banana, then strawberry.

Budget and price, real obstacles to a healthier diet

Are these fruits and vegetables regularly consumed by the French? The desire is present among the population, but the financial means do not seem to follow. Thus, 84% of French people said they wanted to consume “more fruits and vegetables”but would be held back by the price (at 53%). Moreover, nearly 58% of executives and CSP+, and 71% of workers would also be in favor according to the survey, to the establishment of a fruit and vegetable check for the most modest households. In Europe, 43% even say they have reduced their consumption of fruit and vegetables due to inflation in recent months. Figures which, with all the changes that occur on March 1st in France, are not likely to improve.
