“Do not disappoint us”. This is how the Amazon Prime Video Instagram account invited, this Thursday, December 30, Internet users to suggest captions to replace his Instagram “bio”, a line visible directly on the profile’s home page. Many responses were provided but the managers of Amazon’s video streaming service did not expect to receive a particular type of message, as reported by BFMTV.
Several days after launching this initiative, they found themselves faced with hundreds of comments relating to the tax optimization practice of the American giant. Amazon is, in fact, regularly singled out for concealing a large part of its income in France and thus attempting to avoid tax as much as possible.
“We promise, we’ll pay our taxes in France”
During the first hours, most Internet users made various and varied proposals, without necessarily referring to Amazon’s tax problems. But all it took was one Internet user suggesting the comment: “We promise, we will pay our taxes in France”, for the movement to take hold and for hundreds of “likes” to appear on the social network. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video chose another less critical caption: “Daddy’s Home,” featured on his Instagram profile.
Then, Amazon took the opportunity to remove the first comment suggesting that the American multinational should pay its taxes in France. A situation that immediately caused a tidal wave of remarks on Instagram, each using the deleted leitmotif targeting the American giant.
In May 2021, the British daily The Guardian revealed that Amazon had not paid income tax in Europe, despite a turnover of around 44 billion euros. The Luxembourg-based company even benefited from a tax credit of 56 million euros after declaring financial losses.
