We saw the MG S9, the new electric car from MG which “recharges” in 2min30

The MG stand at the Geneva Motor Show is full. As proof, in addition to its new high-end brand IM, the Chinese brand has just presented its MG S9, an electric car that wants to compete with the Tesla Model Y. It remains to be seen whether it will arrive in Europe.

The Geneva Motor Show has just opened its doors and, even though all eyes are on the Renault 5 E-Tech, other new features are interesting.

The MG stand, for example, presents its high-end branch with the IM L6 and IM LS6, but also other electric cars never seen in Europe. Among these, the MG S9, a large “fastback” SUV which we set out to discover.

A fashionable style

What you need to know above all is that the MG S9 is not really new. It has in fact been marketed in China since February 2023, under the name Rising Auto R7. Rising Auto being part of the SAIC group, to which MG is also a part, the R7 was simply rebadged MG for its arrival in Europe.

No surprise, therefore, when discovering the MG S9, since it takes up the look of the R7 step by step. The plunging roofline, a bit like a Tesla Model Y or a Peugeot E-3008, allows for a very promising aerodynamic coefficient (Cd) of 0.238.

Note, however, that the MG S9 is larger than the Tesla or the Peugeot: count 4.90 m long and 1.92 m wide.

In detail, we find very tapered optics connected by a strip at the front and back, which is a bit reminiscent of the Marvel R. In short, nothing stunning, but nothing fundamentally ugly.

In the cabin, we come face to face with a dashboard which immediately brings to mind the Hyperscreen found on high-end Mercedes-Benzes, such as the EQS and EQS SUV.

MG therefore takes up the idea of a huge 43-inch glass panel which hides three screens: one behind the steering wheel of 10.25 inches, a central one of 12.3 inches and one for the passenger of 10.05 inches, the all powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip.

Speaking of passengers, the generous dimensions of this electric SUV seem to benefit the space on board, including a very comfortable rear space. The dimensions of the trunk and the presence (or not) of a frunk at the front remain unknown.

Technical characteristics: nothing revolutionary, but compatibility with battery exchange

The example presented in Geneva announces a 90 kWh battery, capable of powering this MG S9 for 536 km according to the WLTP standard. A 250 kW/340 hp engine allows you to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

If we do not know more, Chinese sites tell us that the Rising Auto R7 is equipped with a 77 kWh NMC (nickel – manganese – cobalt) battery and which, more interestingly, is compatible with battery exchange , a bit like Nio. An exchange that would be done in 2 minutes and 30 seconds according to the brand. It remains to be seen whether this solution will be installed in Europe.

As for the prices of this MG S9, it remains unknown. Its Chinese clone is sold between 189,900 and 229,900 yuan (approximately 24,300 to 29,400 euros), but we know that European prices are systematically higher. No information has yet filtered out on his arrival in France.
