we tested it and it’s very disappointing

Among the most iconic Star Wars games, we can obviously cite Star Wars Battlefront. And in fact, the Classic Collection will be available in a few days on PC via Steam, PS, Xbox Series (and the rest of the platforms). The opportunity to delve into the past. For the best or for the worst ? This is precisely what we tried to determine even if everything did not go as planned.

The Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection is a set bringing together the legendary games of the franchise which marked the first years of the series, now endowed with the aura that we know. At first glance, this collection appears to be specifically designed for Star Wars fans and retro gaming enthusiasts who want to relive or discover the origins of this iconic series. However, it is important to note that this is not a remaster, as some might have thought, but simply a compilation with some bonus features. And even…

A collection of cult Star Wars Battlefront games

The games included in this collection are primarily the first two titles in the series, Star Wars Battlefront (2004) and Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005), originally developed by Pandemic Studios. These games were acclaimed at the time for their ability to immerse players in the epic battles of the Star Wars universe, allowing them to take part in land and air clashes on different planets from the saga.

At first glance, this new version does not seem exceptional for those who have already explored the game from all angles. Especially since the developer Aspyr announces “bonus” content on the Steam page, which notably includes a multiplayer map for the first episode and four for the second. However, we quickly realize that these “bonuses” are in fact elements already accessible in the past thanks to updates for the Xbox and PC versions, or exclusives to the Xbox version. For example, among the two characters announced as bonuses, Asajj Ventress was exclusive to the version for Microsoft, while Kit Fisto, a Jedi ultimately not very notable, was available on PC. Are you starting to understand what the problem is?

Nothing new under the sun?

Ultimately, the name “bonus” can be misleading, suggesting new content, when that is not the case. So be vigilant to avoid any disappointment. The game does not offer anything new compared to the original in terms of content, except that it offers all the additions over time. Not enough to get up at night, we grant you that.

In addition to this, for owners of the GOG version, already equipped with multiplayer and modding features, this collection appears to be purely incidental. But then, who constitutes the target audience? In reality, it only provides an advantage to console players or those who do not own the GOG version, thus offering them the possibility of enjoying great classics on current platforms such as PS5, Xbox Series and Steam. For others, its interest remains very limited. On PC, even taking into account the “bonuses” and the presence of Hero Assault DLC content, it is difficult to justify the additional cost, especially since both games are available at a lower price on GOG. Ultimately, only console players could benefit from this, as it would allow them to relive their memories and take part in large-scale battles with 64 players in the heart of the most emblematic locations of the Star Wars saga. .

As for the game itself, not yet being officially available and the servers being as empty as the Tatooine desert, it is currently very difficult for us to judge the quality of the multiplayer. We are therefore waiting a little before giving you our final opinion on the question through a more complete test.
