Foehn storm #5

The weather has not calmed down since mid-October. On the front of hurricane depression “Domingos” with its center near Great Britain, the fifth foehn storm in the last few weeks will appear in the Alps over the course of Saturday. The strongest gusts will occur on Saturday afternoon and evening. In the classic foehn areas, such as In the Haslital, in the Uri Reuss Valley or in the Rhine Valley, foehn gusts of 80 to 110 km/h are expected. Gusts of around 120 km/h are possible on the summits.

Interim balance sheet until Sunday 5 p.m

Altdorf/UR: 100 km/h

Elm/GL: 96 km/h

Meiringen/BE: 85 km/h

Evionnaz/VS: 81 km/h

Southwest storm

The hurricane depression will also cause stormy weather in the remaining areas of the northern side of the Alps at the weekend. Stormy winds are already coming up on the Jura on Saturday morning. On Sunday the low will pass to the north of us and therefore squalls can also be expected in the lowlands and on the peaks of the foothills of the Alps. Hurricane gusts of up to 140 km/h are possible on the summits. In the lowlands, the gust peaks on Sunday will be between 70 and locally 110 km/h.

Interim balance sheet

La Dole/VD: 112 km/h

Chasseral/NE: 111 km/h

Courtelary/BE: 97 km/h

Mervelier/JU: 95 km/h

Fahy/JU: 85 km/h

Measures

This is the first real autumn storm this year, especially in the lowlands. It is worth securing loose objects in the gardens and on the balconies. Since the trees currently still have a lot of foliage, there is a risk of falling trees or falling branches in some places. As a precaution, we advise against a walk in the forest.

Fallen tree

Legend:

The trees haven’t lost all their leaves yet. Due to the large area exposed to the wind, falling trees cannot be ruled out.
